This little read came riding in on the major wave of apocalypse stories best noted in the work of Stephen King when he made such a big hit with "The Stand." Yes, the world is about to be wiped out by something terrible. In this case, Camile has used a horrible fungus type stuff that is first noted in this country in northern California. This is no ordinary fungus as it attacks with its slimy (Bleh!) people and everything it touches - it spreads and spreads. Now don't mistake this for King's horrible little virus which he conjured up in 1978 and killed most of the people in the world (including dogs and other select critters), no this 1980 offering is much more graphic and well...simply pretty gross. Our center protagonist, Dr. Sander Quency who is the absolutely only physician available in the area, notices something terribly wrong while passing his time at a local watering hole when it is invaded by what is the first example of the havoc this disease causes with humans...think slime covered meth head. Not a pretty sight; not your average good old boy out on the town drinking a few.Well of course our good doctor starts his investigation. Where did this fungus come from? Is it the hand of God finally showing that the big guy has had enough? Is in the Chinese or Russians trying to off us? Is it a strange alien substance/fungus arriving via meteorites? Who's to know? The town is soon on lockdown and surrounded by government troops - no ne leaves; no one enters. Ah, but the fungus is spreading. And now we find that the evil Chinese have the same problem (It is actually all over the world) and have attempted to solve their problem by dropping the big bomb on the whole wretched mess, killing the fungus, and oh by the way, vaporizing a large number of their citizens in the process...a very, very large number - like we are talking millions here! Hmm, wonder if it is those dastardly Russians have something to do with this?Well, our government comes to the decision that this is a great idea, i.e. follow the led of the Chinese and preparations are made to sort of blast N. California and the surrounding area and all of the people there into oblivion. Anyway, our government (President) in al their wisdom make preparations to do the deed. Will Doctor Quence come up with some alternative way of defeating the fungus or are we all doomed! The day is arriving, the Doctor is scrambling - working his tail off as a matter of fact. Can an antidote be found and can civilization as we know it be saved?Sorry gotta read the book to find out. This work is not badly written. It moves along pretty quickly. I suppose you have to place your credibility sensors on hold while you read it but it is not a bad way to waste a couple of evening reading. It should be noted that Clancy Camile is actually a pretty good writer...he probably should stay away from the SiFi genre though.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks
