I purchased this book solely because I was a candidate for the scholarship the author runs at Cornell. The basic premise is that all of us has some sort of problem that we struggle with all our lives. The author's problem is that he wasn't loved as a child and therefore has ruined all fo the relationships in his life. The other theme is that by doing good things we will feel good about ourselves and good things will happen to us.This book is the classic run of the mill self help book that every wacko writes. The author most likely sells most of it to people like myself hoping to get a scholarship. There is no real insight. It reminded me of the recent episode of Family Guy where Brian is making fun of self help books so he writes one in 3 hours that is a load of crap that ends up becoming a best seller because people buy into that sort of stuff. On the up side - if you do read this to prepare for the scholarship it is an easy read and has parts that are somewhat interesting. Outside of that forced reason I would not recommend it.To be fair I did not get the scholarship so perhaps I am a little bitter. Additionally, I am not the self-help type and would never read a book like this normally.

The author expresses several truths, and that is that we are all searching for something else - a better quality of life. This book is a direct manual for anyone interested in finding a guide on how to live life more spontaneously. The book also unlocks the keys to discovering how to tap into the desirable state of human effectiveness or leadership. There are experiences and all of us can recall our basic reactions to most memorable events in our lives. These events, both positive and negative, are what shape us in the end. Many of us don't realize that we have a choice in how we will respond on any given day, to any given experience. When we open our minds to this consciousness, we have an opportunity to change our attitude, and live fuller and happier lives. The book offers poignant exercises on how to unlock your awareness of your inner self, and become more successful in the process. The author relays much of his own personal story to drive home examples of where he made good decisions and not so good decisions in his life. It was easy to relate to many aspects of his life, and I enjoyed reading about his experiences. There are meditative techniques, instructions on how to find your personal state of bliss, guides on ways to embrace intimate relationships with others, find the courage to forgive, and instructions on how to find your true purpose in life and act on it.This book goes beyond being a self-help book on finding purpose or learning to live a better life. It allows the reader to take the time to sum up his or her life and develop a personal guide to make it better going forward.
